You’ve been trying to win the war with your mind, with your anxiety, with your urges, your thoughts. True? Well, ACT is about letting the war roll on while you leave the battlefield.

My name is Alex, and I have worked with young people and adults in the education sector for over 25 years as a teacher, manager, coach and counsellor in both the UK and Aotearoa, NZ.
With a Master of Counselling (First Class Hons), I work as a person-centred counsellor & coach, with an eclectic kete of modalities to support you in a way that works best for you. I am genuine, non-judgmental, empathic, down-to-earth and very approachable. I have worked extensively with young people in schools, as well as supporting adults and whānau. I continue to work part-time as a counsellor in schools, whilst also counselling in private practice, alongside EAP counselling.
I am currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Auckland exploring the role of nature and spirituality within the global crises we find ourselves in. I am interested in how spirituality and nature can help us grow in resilience and find meaning through adversity in order to help us flourish. I have completed a Diploma in Positive Psychology and Well-being and am a great believer in the power of mindful and positive living with an awareness to incorporate our spiritual health as a key component of our holistic well-being.
My counselling approach is person-centred, strength based and solution focused, working with you as your own expert and agent of change. Identifying and working with your strengths and values, I use a number of different brief interventions (3 – 6 sessions) such as:
Focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy (F) ACT, Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness Based Strengths Programmes and Mindfulness Based Stress-Reduction Programmes (MBSP/MBSR), Interactive Drawing Therapy (IDT) or more long term therapies that work at a slower pace, including Narrative, Family Systems and person-centred.
In session, you will be able to work in whatever way suits you: drawing, writing, talking, metaphor, picture cards, role play, mindfulness interventions, use of sand tray etc. I have found that the therapeutic relationship forms very quickly. You will feel heard, accepted without judgment and valued, and leave with clarity and skills/resources for you to practice on your journey to living well.
I offer supervision to student, provisional and fully trained counsellors particularly those working in schools as Guidance Counsellors as this has largely been my area of experience.
