Bede Maclaurin

Psychotherapist

Tēnā tātou katoa – Welcome

Change can be very difficult, whether it’s happening around us or within us. It’s even more difficult if we or those we care for are struggling or suffering.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy can provide time, space, and safety to understand what we need to heal and flourish.

Understanding alone may not seem enough, and it often isn’t. But understanding offers a place to rest and recover, to see where we’ve come from and where we’re going. Understanding shared with another person can be a powerful and effective step towards wellbeing.

Psychotherapy is just one of many ways to help your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. If you feel it may help you then please do reach out to talk.

(Following the above mihi, I want to clarify here that I’m Pākehā. If you are seeking a Kaupapa Māori practitioner I’ll be more than happy to provide a referral.)

I have been curious about human nature for as long as I can remember. Our minds, thoughts, feelings, and souls are endlessly complex, often beautiful, at times terrifying. My curiosity has led me to study literature, philosophy, religion, history, psychology and psychotherapy. I have been engaged with individual and group psychotherapeutic practices for many years.

Areas of Interest

Most recently, my research has been exploring the application of online psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am happy to offer online sessions where it is suitable.

My past experience includes:

Working as a Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP) in Ōtara, Counties Manukau. The HIP role is based in primary care clinics – i.e. medical GP clinics – and aims to offer brief interventions to whaiora seeking support with managing a wide range of physical and mental health concerns.

Working as an AOD clinician at Papa Taumata / Higher Ground, a residential addiction treatment centre. Because addiction affects people from all walks of life, I have experience working with clients of many different identities, cultures, communities, and nationalities.

Some other areas of interest for me are anxiety, depression, relationships, neurodivergence, chronic illness, and rehabilitation.
