Arts therapy is a mental health profession that enhances the well-being of individuals through creative expression. By integrating art-making with psychotherapeutic principles, it fosters healing, self-expression, and personal growth in a supportive, therapeutic environment. Facilitated by a registered clinical art therapist; arts therapy helps individuals explore their emotions, cope with stress, trauma, or grief, and improve overall mental health and well-being.
I am a registered clinical creative arts therapist and a Hawke’s Bay local with a practice based in Hastings Central. I work with children, young people, and adults, offering both individual sessions and group facilitation.
Children, in particular, may benefit from arts therapy when facing challenges such as anxiety, behavioral issues, emotional regulation difficulties, trauma, grief, or changes in family dynamics. Through creative expression, they can explore and process difficult emotions in a safe and non-judgmental space, helping them develop coping skills, resilience, and a stronger sense of self. Arts therapy can also support children in building social and communication skills, improving their overall emotional well-being.
Arts therapy is not limited to children and offers powerful insights for adults as well; helping them navigate a wide range of challenges such as stress, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties and life transitions. For adults, creative expression can provide a meaningful outlet for self-reflection, emotional release, and personal growth, facilitating deeper understanding and healing.
My professional experience spans the fields of including mental health and addiction, disability support, and dementia care.
I use a trauma-informed, multi-modal and person-centred approach to therapy, ensuring that each person’s unique needs and experiences are at the core of my practice. I aim to create a safe and supportive environment that recognizes the impact of trauma and prioritizes safety and trust. Multi-modal refers to the use of various creative methods, such as visual arts, movement, and sound, within a session. I am dedicated to fostering a space that is inclusive and collaborative, where individuals feel heard, valued, and empowered to thrive.
I hold a Master’s degree in Fine Art and a Master’s in Arts in Creative Arts Therapy (Clinical). I am a professional member of the Australia, New Zealand, and Asia Creative Arts Therapy Association (ANZACATA) and adhere to their ethical standards, ensuring I practice with integrity, respect, and professionalism. Additionally, I am guided by the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which underpin my commitment to cultural safety, partnership, and equity in all aspects of my work.
I look forward to connecting with you. Ngā mihi mahana.
