Tommy Livingston

Counsellor (B.A., PGDipEd, MCounsStuds).

Kia ora, I’m Tommy.

When I went to see a counsellor for the first time, I was nervous. But through counselling, I learned how to make sense of my past, be kinder to myself, and enjoy my life in a whole new way.

As a journalist, I spent countless hours with people from all walks of life, listening to their stories and helping them to express themselves. I decided to retrain as a counsellor so I could play a more active role in supporting people.

We live in a busy, distracted culture. It can be hard to feel seen and heard — even by our loved ones. Counselling is a chance to focus on what matters to you.

I help my clients to feel equipped and motivated to make positive changes. Benefits of counselling can include a greater sense of purpose, being more in touch with your values, having healthier relationships, and better overall wellbeing.

I practice person-centred counselling, which is about making you feel safe and supported to achieve your goals. I’m an empathetic listener, and I allow my clients to set the pace and focus of our sessions.

I work with people from all ages, cultures and backgrounds. I have experience in supporting people through:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Stress and burnout
  • Relationship issues
  • Unwanted sexual behaviours
  • Past trauma
  • Addiction
  • Loneliness

I’m trained in a range of psychological modalities, such as CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), narrative therapy and solution-focused therapy. I have a particular focus on ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), which is about living a values-based life.

As part of my Master’s, I researched the phenomenon of post-traumatic growth. I have a particular interest in working with people who have experienced trauma, and helping them to grow through that experience.

I’d love to chat.

I offer one-hour sessions, either in person or via Zoom. In-person sessions are held at my practice on Brandon St in Wellington.

In-person sessions are available on Tuesdays (daytime) and Wednesdays (afternoon only). If these slots do not suit you, let me know. Online sessions can be arranged by appointment.

Sessions cost $140. If cost is a barrier for you, I have access to some limited funding streams that may be of assistance.

To arrange a session, or if you have any queries, please contact me via the enquiry form or send me a text on 027 859 8902.
