Yulia Ashby

NZAC Registered Counsellor

Background

I am a provisional NZAC-registered counsellor and a fully certified mindfulness coach. I was born in Russia, where I worked as a language teacher before I came to New Zealand 17 years ago to continue my teaching career. This exposed me to a great variety of people from different backgrounds. I am passionate about mental health, which led me to train in counselling and psychology. I hold a graduate diploma and a postgraduate qualification in psychology and am currently undergoing post-qualifying training in adult psychotherapy with the Australia New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy.

Experience

I have worked as a Helplines Counsellor for several years and completed my counselling internship at a specialist addictions treatment facility. During this time, I received extensive training and clinical supervision, which developed a capacity to work with clients from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of presenting issues.

Counselling approach

I believe that because people’s lives and journeys are different, there is not one particular style or modality that suits everyone. Therefore, in my practice, I integrate psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive, and mindfulness approaches and tailor sessions to suit your specific needs. I am particularly interested in working through childhood experiences and early attachment. I strongly believe in strength-based counselling and will work collaboratively with you to help you make empowered decisions about your life and achieve optimal well-being.

I support clients struggling with:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • managing emotions
  • relationship difficulties
  • low self-esteem
  • problems related to migration
  • parenting challenges
  • transitional stages of life such as perimenopause
